On the search for new music that will make your heart soar and your toes tap? Cabaret queen Trevor Ashley (DIVA DEGUSTATION) opens up the songbook to share 5 tunes that have struck a chord and why. Listen now on the Spotify playlist below!

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER – Shirley Bassey
Always my ultimate Diva, Dame Shirley’s classic song is filled with drama, passion and epic notes. I love singing it, and never tire of her voice!

SOME PEOPLE – Liza Minnelli
In the musical Gypsy, this song is a medium tempo point song. But under Minnelli’s spell, it’s an uptempo, outrageous piece, full of energy and character. And a great brass section.

I COULD HAVE BEEN A SAILOR – Peter Allen
Like most Australians, we love ourselves some Peter Allen. I am a huge fan of his songs, and this one is my favourite. The lyrics are so poignant and the melody is fab.

MORE – Madonna
As a closet Madge fan, I was fortunate to first discover her “I’m Breathless” album in 1990. A rare gem among Madonna albums, it features Sondheim songs and numbers inspired by musical theatre (apart from the mega hit Vogue). This song was from the movie Dick Tracy, and she nails the 1940s style.

LAUGHING MATTERS – Bette Midler
The Divine Miss M is my comedy hero, but god, can she nail a ballad. This particular song is quite unknown, but I love the lyrics, and after the year(s) we’ve had, laughing does matter most.
