Ensemble Ed OPEN STAGE Program
The Ensemble Ed OPEN STAGE Program is our commitment to the next generation of Australian theatre, made possible by the generosity of The Balnaves Foundation with additional support from Simon Poole and Louise Cardenas-Poole. OPEN STAGE is our platform for programming a range of enriching, diverse and accessible creative education experiences through a tiered program approach.
ENSEMBLE IGNITE
This program stream focusses on providing a jumping off point for students who have yet to experience live theatre. Whether through our Dedicated Schools’ Performances, or other collaborations like The Smith Family SmArts Program, IGNITE is meant to spark a love of theatre for students nation-wide.
ENSEMBLE EMERGE
Ensemble EMERGE is a new initiative focusing on providing a range of opportunities for emerging theatre makers across New South Wales. Incorporating initiatives like our ETC Regional Theatremakers Mentorship, the program has been designed to function as a dynamic pipeline for young artists, nurturing creativity, technical skills, and meaningful industry connections to support the next generation of theatre professionals.
Each year, we host dedicated education performances for students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to see live theatre. In 2025, our Dedicated School’s Performances were THE GLASS MENAGERIE and FLY GIRL. In 2026, we are thrilled to be offering another two Dedicated School’s Performances. First up, will be the Australian classic THE DAPTO CHASER by Mary Rachel Brown, followed by David Williamson’s TOP SILK.
After the performance students will be provided with lunch and will also participate in a Q&A session with the cast and creatives.
These special performances are made possible by the support of the Clitheroe Foundation and The Balnaves Foundation.

In 2026, we are proud to continue our partnership with The Smith Family. As part of their SmArts education program, we work closely to provide students with unique access and learning opportunities within the theatre.
This year students had access to a week-long experience engaging in a range of workshops including acting, writing, directing, set design and devising. The workshops were delivered by some of Australia’s leading artists and culminated in a performance of the Pulitzer prize-winning play, PRIMARY TRUST by Eboni Booth. The students also took part in a Q & A with cast member Angela Mahlatjie following the show.
